The Spelling Bee?

The Spelling Bee?

Riley Freeburg, Editor

The spelling bee is a tradition across schools worldwide that showcases students ability to spell words. Some kids dread this tradition while others wait for it every year. Well, last Wednesday as you may have noticed we had our school spelling bee here at RBMS. To get into the school one you had to win the classroom one held in each student’s ELA class for all grade levels. This is how they cut down on time for the school one and figure out who might have the potential to represent us in the district wide one.
Sri Edala ended up winning the school one and is now moving onto the regional semi-finals to represent RBMS. After the semi-finals are the Austin regional finals and lastly, the national spelling bee in Washington DC.
Only the top 2 of our school spelling bee will move onto the regional semi-finals but 75% of the regional semi-finalists will move onto the austin regional finals. From then on only the winner will move on to DC to attempt to win.
If you competed in our school spelling bee you would know that Mr. Hauenstein was the host so I asked him if he would be attending any of the other spelling bees. Mr. Hauenstein said, “Typically I observe the semi-finals for the school champion because it’s online.” The semi-finals are on the computer so as he said, he will be watching the winner to ensure they’re not cheating.
The finals are supposed to be soon but all the commotion going on might withhold it for a while. “I’m not sure for a date yet but usually the finals are held in March. Although they did tell us it might be pushed back due to covid.” Mr. Hauenstein said. Now, Even though we don’t know when they are going to be, make sure to stay tuned to see if Sri makes it all the way and cheer her on as she goes!
